(a) The negative result of M.M. Experiment has two consequences:
(i) The velocity of light in free space is invariable and remains constant in all directions.
$>$ This has been verified by Doppler’s principle that speed of light is independent of motion of source and observer.

By Einstein’s Relativistic velocity addition theorem that by adding or subtracting any velocity to velocity of light, the resultant remains equal to velocity of light.
$>$ Since no motion through ether was detected, hence all attempts to make ether as a preferred frame of reference failed.
(ii) The absolute concept of mass, length and time is not true.
According to Einstein concept of absolute motion is insignificant while concept of relative motion has physical significance.
$>$ The mass, length, time is not absolute but relative (v ary with velocity).

The different scientist proposed three alternatives about ether to explain negative result of M.M. Experiment.
(a) Completely Ether Drag theorv:
(i) It was proposed by Hertz that ether was completely drag along by the moving bodies. Hence there is no relative motion between earth and ether. Therefore there is no possibility of detecting absolute motion with respect to ether by optical experiment. Hence negative results of M.M. Experiment support this theory.
(ii) Cause of Rejection
But this hypothesis was rejected because it was quite incapable of explaining experimentally observed phenomenon such as aberration of light (if ether drag completely no aberration should be observed).
(b) Partial ether drag theory:
(i) It was proposed by Fresnel and Fizeau that ether was partially dragged along the bodies in motion. Fresnel on purely theoretical ground find the expression for Fresnel coefficient of ether drag as $\left(1-\frac{1}{n^2}\right)$ where $\mathrm{n}$ is refractive index of water.
(ii) Fizeau using interference method able to show that a moving column of water did really drag the ether along with it to the exact amount predicted by Fresnel’s formula. Hence Fizeau was able to explain negative result by hypothetical formula approximately.
(iii) Experimental Arrangement: Experimental of Fizeau experiment is given in the figure given below.
