To create a histogram like the one you see below (using the data from question #28) follow the steps on page 57 .

1. Using graph paper with $1 / 4$ – to $1 / 2$-inch boxes (you can create your own at www.printfreegraphpaper.com), label the vertical or $y$-axis as “Frequency” and the $x$-axis as “Class Interval.” In this example (see the answer to question #28), the $y$-axis can be labeled from 0 to 12 and the $x$-axis as $0-4,5-9,10-14,15-19$, and 20-24.
2. Create a column for each of the midpoints of the class interval. The midpoint is the center of the class interval. The height of each bar in the histogram corresponds to the frequency of that class interval. For example, for the class interval of 10-14, which has a midpoint of 12 , the height of the bar representing frequency should be at the value of 7.
a. You can also make tally marks for each occurrence of a score, resulting in the same visual representation but no bars-just a set of tally marks stacked upon one another.

The value of a histogram is that you can easily get a sense of what class of values occurs more frequently than others, get a rough estimate of the range of scores, and get an idea of the average (such as the median or the mean).
