The counting numbers $1,2,3, \cdots$ are called natural numbers. A basic assumption here is that for every such number $n$ there is a successor $n+1$. There is, accordingly, no last natural number. Together with 0 these numbers and their negatives comprise the set of integers.

A rational number is one that can be expressed as the quotient of two integers, viz., $\frac{2}{3}, \frac{7}{11}, 6,1,-\frac{3}{5}, 1.25,0.454545 \cdots$.

An irrational number is a real number that is not rational; i.e., one that cannot be expressed as the quotient of two integers, viz., $\sqrt{2}, \pi, \sqrt[3]{-7}$.
The set of all rational numbers (which includes the integers) and the irrational numbers form the set of real numbers. This set may be displayed as points on a line in the following fashion:

Rectangular Coordinate System. We shall assume a plane upon which we select two perpendicular lines.
