Consider a long-term clinical trial. Patients with a specific illness are given a treatment and the length of time that they live subsequent to treatment is recorded. The data take the form of times until an event; in this case the event is death. In this context, the analysis of time-to-event data is often referred to as survival analysis. The treatment is deemed effective if the survival times for the treatment group are longer than those for the control group. The problem of determining whether differences in survival times are significant is one of statistical inference. It is often the case that there are a number of covariates that have an impact on survival time. Obvious examples include the patient’s age, the stage in the illness when treatment is administered, and the lifestyle of the patient (their eating habits, whether or not they smoke, etc.).

Time-to-event data arise in a number of other contexts. In measuring the reliability of a manufactured product, the variable of interest is the length of time until the product fails. Banks are interested in the length of time that customers hold accounts with them. Government agencies may analyse the length of time that individuals spend claiming a particular benefit. It is hard to get away from emotive terms in time-to-event analysis. For the sake of clarity, we will use terms that make sense in the reliability context. Thus, the variable of interest is the survival time or length of life of an entity. At the start, the entity is functioning. The event of interest is failure, and our data consist of a collection of failure times.
